Vera failed the hearing test at the ENT clinic today. On both ears.
"How can that be?" was my first reaction. We knew she has never responded to sound on her left ear, but she's been responding on her right.
It was explained to us that the test was a very stringent one - even if there's mild hearing loss, you'd fail the test. So there's still a possibility that she CAN hear in her right ear, just not perfect hearing.
The ENT doctor suggested we go for a detailed hearing test, which would clear the matter accurately once and for all, but it requires GA and intubation, which we're not keen to subject Vera to at this point in time. So for now, we won't know for sure HOW MUCH she can actually hear us.
No matter what, it doesn't change things. We'll still continue talking and singing to her.

AS she matures, this may change. I have heard this before and then they realize they do have some hearing. I know with Annabel they say she hears at this point but test every 6 mths. saying that sometimes they do lose their hearing.
hey, trust your instincts. you KNOW if she can hear or not. and even if she doesn't hear with her ears, she is definitely hearing with her heart. She can feel your immense love with every touch, and every soothing sound you make sends all sorts of wonderful vibes and tingles through her.... :-)
Yes, I'm positive she enjoys the vibrations when I hum with her resting on my chest. And she turns when we call her on her right side, not always though. All we can do is to keep stimulating her hearing and maximise whatever is there. Thanks Cathy for the info that they might lose their hearing. It is sad but glad that I know.
we had kaiya tested at about 1 year and then again at 2 and yet again at 4 and kaiya failed her hearing tests too. the audiologist that did the first two tests told us that any small thing can interfere with the test and since she was a heavy breather (she had to be sleeping for the test) the audiologist felt that that might be causing some issues with the machine they were using. we were also told that b/c she was so small and her ear canals were especially small, the testing equipment was not the correct size for her, but they didn't have smaller ones. it was recommended that we get a different type of test but the audiologist did say that she was sure kaiya could hear b/c as she was observing her kaiya would turn her head to look at who was speaking. one thing i have heard is that T18 kids have very small ear canals and when they are very young this causes issues wit their hearing, but as they get older and everything grows - the ear canals get bigger and their hearing can actually get better. i know of a boy that had to wear hearing aids when he was young, but when he got to be about 3 or so he would scream and cry when they put them in. they found that his hearing had gotten so much better that the hearing aids made things way too loud and hurt his ears...
Kelly I've a feeling what you've said is absolutely true... Vera was breathing very noisily during the test so that could have really affected the test. Yeah I just have to believe her hearing will improve with time as her ears get bigger. thanks for sharing.
